Underhood Wiring Done!

All the underhood wiring is complete unless I run into something that needs to be repaired or modified, or if I decide to add another circuit. It was a slow process, but I'm pleased with the results so far.

I also got a start on the interior wiring. I'm laying out the wire bundle routing and making hook-up charts and plug maps. Most of this part of the wiring should be a bit easier, but then I've said that before and regretted it!

This phase will require installing the console and dashboard, so I'll have some design problems to resolve during installation. I've been putting that part off until I was confident the basic structure would work out, and I think it will with minor tweaks.

Got a few photos, but had the usual camera issues.

  1. Looki'n good Gary..must do something with the wiring on my Savoy too,its so cracked and dryed out, expecially under the hood.As I plan to keep this car stock,I hope it will be easier.See there are a few companies offering replacement sets,so we'll see..maybe this coming winter ?

  2. It certainly would be a much faster easier job to buy stock replacements, and if you count your time, it would also be far less expensive!

Since most of my wire was missing and I was installing a non-stock drivetrain, ignition system and aftermarket AC, it would have been nearly as difficult to modify a stock wire bundle. Where I made a bad choice was re-grouping the circuits with the idea it would be relatively simple, but it created massive confusion for my old brain.

I don't know if you like to sport fish, but modifying all the circuits is sort of like trying to fix a backlash in your fishing reel. You pull one part of the line thinking it will fix the problem and you find it's attached to everything else in the world!

If you replace your stock wiring next winter, you may finish before I do!! I know one thing for sure...my plans to have it on the road this year will have to change.

  3. Gary, somehow I don't find time to go fishing anymore, but used to do so in my younger days, and I know exactly what you mean ! A good comparison,he,he..coming winter will be busy,as I lost my storage place for the chassis for my 55 wagon,so must finish it's body,so they can be married as soon as possible. The Savoy is stored elsewhere, and I can't do no " heavy " stuff there, but think rewiring will be ok with the storage owner..

  4. Geir, a lack of work space was my problem before we built our new house. When I agreed with my wife's desire to move, I said it would only happen if I could build a detached workshop/garage for my car hobby.

I got my way, and I now have a one car bay where I keep the car and that can be closed off from the office and tool storage area if I'm doing paperwork or working on small items. The only feature I wish I had was enough room for a paint booth.

Across the wall from my work area is a two car garage and garden equipment storage. My '64 Valiant convertible and the '73 Dodge pickup I bought new are stored in there. My only issue now is a lack of strength and stamina to maintain the house and property. I just don't have enough energy to spend as much time as I'd like to work on the car.
