Console Progress

I only had a couple of hours to play, but another minor accomplishment!

The shifter cover is cut and formed and only needs to be trimmed in size and mounted to the console top plate. Everything else inside the console passed the fit check, so now I can put the console aside and get back to it when I need some smaller jobs to fill in, like installing trim, carpet and fabric.

Next week, schedule permitting, I'll call the glass installer and see if he can help me get the trim installed on the back window. If a pair of experienced hands doesn't work, it may require re-setting the glass.

  1. The console looks great Gary - well done ! Is the top cover some kind of aluminium..? Looks amazing..

  2. It's embossed aluminum that's quite close to the stock pattern found on the '56 dash. The basic console structure is 18ga.sheet metal, while the aluminum trim is very light weight and only 8" wide. It will be glued to the sheet metal.

  3. I'm thinking of brightening up the rather dull dash on my Plaza when time comes, and thought I should try metal turning on aluminium sheets as inlays, but your embossed alu. looks maybe even better. Possible to buy it somewhere ?

  4. Geir, you can see the pattern a little better in a December 2015 blog entry. One picture shows the stock material still on the radio panel, and the pattern I bought next to it. I found it online, but don't recall the name of the supplier. Somewhere I have all the information, but all the invoices are in a box waiting to be sorted and filed. I do recall there was a minimum buy so I still have some extra. Let me know how much you need and I'll check if I have enough for your job.

  5. Thank you for your kind offer Gary, your dash shure looks great..I'm far from deciding what to do with mine yet,but I do have the trim for the 56 Belvedere/Fury,but one of them have the holes for the "idiot" lights,so I'll have to do something there. One way could be to get another for the right side,or replace it all with a another material, like the embrossed aluminium you have used..but,there's no rush,I'm just trying to keep the dream alive of getting this wagon done sometime in the future. If you do find out where you bought the embrossed sheets,it could maybe be a chance I can buy it here too..? But again, there's no rush..

  6. Before I decided what design I should use, I also played with the idea of replacing the trim that has the idiot light holes. I cut a piece of the embossed aluminum to the same shape, and used some half-round stick-on chromed plastic to see if it would bend and stay curved to look somewhat like the original ’56 piece. It looked quite nice and it sat on the shelf for several months without the plastic coming loose. I just threw it away during a clean-up a few weeks ago, or I could have taken a picture to show you. If you want to try that, just email your mailing address and I’ll send you enough to play with...no charge.
